Maintaining kinship ties (Silat al-Rahim) is obligatory. The one who truly maintains ties is he who connects with his relatives even when they sever ties with him. Maintaining kinship ties includes both men and women. A married woman is not permitted to leave her house except with her husband's permission. However, a husband does not have the right to prevent his wife from communicating or corresponding with her relatives.
