What is the ruling on maintaining ties of kinship with relatives who sever ties with us and mistreat us due to old family disputes, especially after our mother was subjected to mistreatment?

The Shari'a commanded the upholding of kinship ties and forbade their severance. The obligation to uphold kinship ties is not waived by a relative's ill-treatment or harm. Therefore, it is not permissible to sever ties with maternal uncles; rather, it is obligatory to maintain ties with them in a way that does not cause greater harm or corruption. Upholding kinship ties is not limited to visiting; it also includes communicating, corresponding, exchanging greetings, and anything else that is customarily considered a connection. It is not permissible to respond to insults and curses in kind, because one sin should not be met with another.
