Is cashback from e-wallet applications, resulting from money transfers, shopping from the application, or paying with it in other stores, permissible (halal)?
There is no objection to using digital wallets for money transfers or purchasing goods, provided that immediate possession is verified when buying gold, silver, or currencies. As for cashback from applications, it is permissible if it is a discount offered by stores to users. However, if applications give money or gifts to encourage users to deposit or top up their balance, this is forbidden, because depositing money in wallets is considered a loan to the entity operating them, and it is not permissible to accept gifts for loans, based on what Ibn Majah narrated from Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If one of you grants a loan, and the borrower gives him a gift or offers him a ride on his mount, he should not ride it or accept it, unless they had a prior habit of doing so." And what Al-Bukhari narrated from Abu Burdah, who said: "I came to Medina and met Abdullah bin Salam, may Allah be pleased with him. He said to me: You are in a land where usury is rampant. If you have a right over a man, and he offers you a load of straw, or a load of barley, or a load of clover as a gift, do not accept it, for it is usury."
