What is the mother's duty towards her infant, and will she be punished if she falls short in matters such as breastfeeding and feeding due to negligence and laziness?

The mother is not obligated to breastfeed her child if someone else is available. She may request payment for breastfeeding from the child's money or from the one responsible for his maintenance, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿فَإِنْ أَرْضَعْنَ لَكُمْ فَآتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ﴾ (Then if they suckle for you, give them their due payment). This applies to both married and divorced women. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis believe that the mother is entitled to payment, unlike the Hanafis and Malikis. If a volunteer for breastfeeding is found, the child's guardian is not obliged to pay the mother. The same ruling applies to custody; it is not obligatory for the mother if someone else is available, and she has the right to demand payment for it.
