What is the text of the hadith: "Perhaps you kissed her," and what is the punishment for each case mentioned therein?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The aforementioned hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim, narrated by Ibn Abbas, recounts the story of Ma'iz ibn Malik with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, where the Prophet asked him: "Perhaps you kissed, or winked, or looked?" Ma'iz denied that, but upon his confession of adultery, the Prophet ordered him to be stoned.

Kissing, winking, and forbidden glances mentioned in the hadith are unlawful in Islamic law and necessitate sin and sincere repentance, but they do not necessitate the implementation of legal penalties (hudud). Adultery, however, is one of the gravest major sins and necessitates the implementation of the legal penalty.
