It is permissible for a discerning boy to pray with the congregation, and he should be encouraged to do so. He is allowed in the first row if he arrives there before others. Discretion is not limited to the age of seven; a child may be discerning at a younger age. As for an undiscerning boy, he should not be brought to the mosque unless there is a necessity, such as having no one to care for him. If the father brings him, there is no harm in having him next to him in the row to prevent him from harming himself or others. The alignment of an undiscerning boy in the prayer row is not valid, but he is not considered to break the row, and his passing in front of a worshipper does not invalidate the prayer.
