Have scholars differed concerning the meaning of Zuhd?

Scholars have not differed on the virtue and importance of Zuhd (asceticism), though their expressions in defining it have varied. However, these expressions all revert to a single meaning: abandoning that which is of no benefit in the Hereafter. Its reality is the emptying of the heart from attachment to that which is of no benefit in the Hereafter, and it has levels: abandoning the unlawful and doubtful matters, then abandoning excess from the lawful, then abandoning that which distracts one from Allah. It has also been said: it is the removal of the world from the heart and placing it in the hand, in preparation for spending and expending it in what pleases Allah.
