The answer

If a renegade couple embraces Islam together, their marriage is affirmed. However, if one of them embraces Islam and the other delays until the woman's 'iddah (waiting period) expires, then, according to the majority of scholars, the marriage must be renewed. Others, however, such as Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, his student Ibn al-Qayyim, and Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen, hold that the marriage is not dissolved by the expiration of the 'iddah, and the couple may return to each other with their original marriage contract without the need for renewal. They base their argument on the hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned Zaynab to her husband Abu al-Aas with her original marriage contract.
