Slaughtering is not required when acquiring something new. However, there is no harm in doing so as an act of gratitude to Allah for the blessing. There are no specific conditions for the animal to be slaughtered or for its distribution, and the closest relatives have the first right to the good deed. What some people believe, that slaughtering brings blessings or protects from the evil eye and jinn, has no basis. Slaughtering with the intention of protection from jinn is an act of polytheism (shirk) against Allah.
