The majority of scholars hold that debt exempts hidden wealth from . Therefore, when the time for zakat comes, outstanding debts are subtracted from the wealth. If the remaining amount reaches the (minimum threshold) after the deduction, then zakat is obligatory; otherwise, it is not. If there is other non-zakat-eligible wealth exceeding one's needs, it can be used to offset the debt, so that the zakat-eligible wealth can be paid. The nisab for banknotes is approximately equivalent to 85 grams of gold, and the obligatory zakat is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%).
