How should one treat parents who prefer their irreligious son over their religious son, and is it permissible to abandon them?

This world is a place of trial, and the greater the trial, the greater the reward. So, be patient with the harm from your family and repel [evil] with what is better, for the outcome of patience is beautiful. Try to enlighten them about their Worshipped One and remind them of their servitude to Allah and the purpose for which they were created. Use wisdom in your call to them. If you wish to change your relationship with them, then begin by changing yourself. Strive your utmost to draw closer to your parents and show affection to them. Speak to them gently and look at them with love, compassion, and mercy. Ask Allah to guide them, and remain steadfast in your faith and uprightness. Seek righteous company that will help you in doing good.
