What is the ruling on ill omens, and how can one get rid of them in cases of repeated bad luck?

"Tatayyur" (superstitious belief in omens) is to be pessimistic about something disliked. Its origin lay in actions that deterred people from their interests. The Sharia has forbidden and invalidated it, considering it a form of shirk (polytheism), based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Al-Tiyarah is shirk."

Tatayyur can be major shirk if the person believing in omens thinks that what he uses as an omen is the true doer of harm or benefit. It can be minor shirk if he believes that Allah is the One who harms and benefits, but that the omen is merely a cause for that.

The cure for tatayyur is to rely upon Allah Almighty and depend on Him. A person is not held accountable for what comes to mind regarding this meaning, as long as he does not act upon it.
