Jaber bin Zayd was a Tabi'i Imam from among the scholars of Basra and a student of Ibn Abbas. Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar both testified to his jurisprudence, knowledge, and qualification for issuing fatwas. Scholars unanimously agreed on his trustworthiness and eminence. He passed away in the year 93 AH. His attribution to the Ibadis is incorrect, as he is innocent of them, and Jaber bin Zayd himself disavowed them. Scholars of his era also declared his non-affiliation with this Kharijite sect. Later Ibadis claim that Jaber bin Zayd is the founder of their sect to market their innovation, while ancient Ibadi historians confirm that the founder and first Imam of the Ibadi sect is Abdullah bin Ibad.
