What is the ruling on bearing witness to and affirming something merely to accommodate your situation, when you know that it harms the other party?

The rulings concerning testimony vary depending on the situation. It may be obligatory if it is based on knowledge, sight, and hearing, and there is no other witness available, and one is called upon to give it, even if it harms another party. This is based on the Almighty's saying: "And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it – his heart is indeed sinful." The intention behind it must be to seek closeness to Allah, not to achieve personal gain. As for false testimony and lying, it is impermissible and is one of the gravest major sins, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "The greatest major sins are associating partners with Allah, disobedience to parents, and false testimony." Whoever bears false witness must repent to Allah, and if it resulted in the loss of a right, then the right must be restored by informing the judge.
