How can one deal with a husband who ignores his wife at family gatherings, preferring to sit with his sisters, and with a mother-in-law who interferes in their marital affairs?

Good marital relations require each spouse to consider the feelings of the other, strive to make them happy, and consider their circumstances and their relationships with those who have rights. The wife must be deliberate in assessing matters, as the husband's actions may be justified. If not, she should handle the situation wisely, treat him kindly, and respond to ill-treatment with good, as Allah Almighty said: "And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] with that which is better, and immediately behold, he between whom and you was enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good]." This fosters closeness of hearts. The interference of relatives in the couple's life is rejected and should be dealt with wisely, patiently, and tolerantly, as long as it remains within the bounds of what is permissible and impermissible.
