Is sponsoring an orphan with a living mother (but no father) the same as sponsoring an orphan with no parents, and does it fall under the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "I and the sponsor of an orphan are like these two (fingers)"?

It has been authentically narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that the one who sponsors an orphan will be his companion in Paradise. An orphan is defined as someone who loses their father before reaching puberty. As for someone who loses their mother but not their father, there is a difference of opinion. Al-Zarkashi mentioned that an orphan among humans is defined by the death of the father, while among animals it is by the death of the mother. Imam Ibn Hajar was of the view that sponsoring an orphan applies to the father if he takes the place of the mother in upbringing upon her loss. Therefore, whoever sponsors a newborn who has lost its mother falls under this virtue. Generally, whoever does good to others will receive reward and recompense.
