Does water entering the anus during istinja' (washing after defecating) break the fast?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Water entering the anus during istinja (cleaning after defecation) does not invalidate the fast, because it is not eating or drinking, nor does it carry their meaning. Similarly, an enema and ajiil (suppository) do not invalidate the fast. It is advised not to be excessive and intentionally introduce water under the pretext of increasing purity, as this is blameworthy extremism in Islamic law.
