The answer

Zaynab, the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi‘. He married her in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah). Abu al-As embraced Islam after Zaynab’s emigration, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned her to him with their original marriage contract. Abu al-As had been captured at Uhud, and when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Khadijah’s necklace, which Zaynab had sent as ransom for him, he felt compassion for him and remembered Khadijah with mercy. He asked the Companions to release him and return Zaynab’s belongings, which they did. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had made Abu al-As promise to release Zaynab to him, and he fulfilled his promise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Abu al-As, saying: "He spoke to me and told me the truth," and in another narration: "He promised me and fulfilled his promise to me."
