There are many forbidden sales, and their origin goes back to Allah's prohibition of consuming people's wealth unjustly. Allah mentioned two types of consuming wealth unjustly in commutative transactions: Riba (usury/interest) and Maysir (gambling). Riba is strictly forbidden, and Maysir is anything that involves Gharar (excessive uncertainty), meaning an unknown outcome, and leads to enmity, hatred, and consuming wealth unjustly. Every sale that includes Riba or Maysir, or is a trick to them, is forbidden, such as Bay' al-'Inah (a specific type of buy-back sale) and the sale of unknown items.
