Was the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, the first to compile a census of Muslim names?

This is an authentic Hadith (definition) narrated by Muslim, Ahmad, and Ibn Majah from Hudhayfah, where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked to count those who professed Islam. When asked about the reason for this, despite their large number, he replied: "You do not know; perhaps you will be tested." The wording in Bukhari is: "So we wrote down for him one thousand five hundred men." An-Nawawi reconciled the two narrations by explaining that the first number (six hundred to seven hundred) refers to the men of Medina, while the second number (one thousand five hundred) includes the Muslims around them.
