Is it permissible to look at women in the street with the intention of choosing one of them for marriage, and is it permissible to show a picture of the selected girl to a friend to confirm her family's approval?

It is not permissible to look at women in the street, because Allah has commanded the believers to lower their gaze. Looking with the intention of proposing marriage is a dangerous door opened by Satan, and it may become a habit leading to looking at women without the purpose of marriage. He who wishes to propose marriage does not look at adorned women in the streets; rather, he asks people of virtue about righteous women. Looking in the street focuses on outward beauty rather than inward beauty (religiousness and character), which is more important. One must choose a woman of religiousness and good character, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her religious commitment. So succeed with the woman of religious commitment, may your hands be soiled." Marriage is loftier than merely satisfying lust, and one must seek the true qualities that bring lasting happiness. It is not permissible to عرض (display) the woman one intends to propose to, to friends for them to look at her, and a man should have ghirah (protective jealousy) over his family.
