What is the degree of prohibition of permanently preventing procreation without a compelling excuse?

It is forbidden to use contraceptives entirely except when necessary, such as fearing for the woman's life. No statements from scholars have been found regarding the degree of this prohibition. A Muslim must avoid all forbidden things, and this does not depend on knowing whether they are minor or major sins.
