What is the ruling on a husband saying to his wife, who went out with kohl on, "By Allah, you will not accompany me if you go out with kohl on again"?

A man's statement to his wife, "Do not follow me if I leave wearing kohl," might not be an كناية (allusion) to divorce. If he did not intend divorce by it, then nothing takes effect, but he owes expiation if the wife disobeys what he said.

However, if he intended divorce by it, then it takes effect as soon as she leaves wearing kohl. This is the view of the majority of scholars, in contrast to Ibn Taymiyyah, who holds that a contingent divorce does not take effect if it was intended as a threat, prevention, or encouragement, and that it is dissolved by an expiation for an oath.
