You have done well by retracting your oath, as it was concerning a forbidden matter, and you must offer expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yamin (definition)). You must also beware of anger, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not get angry." The expiation for breaking an oath is feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or emancipating a slave. If you cannot find any of these, then it is fasting for three days. As for maids, they must be treated with kindness and not burdened with what they cannot bear. Advise the maid to be dutiful to her parents and to be patient with them, even if they treat her badly. It is not permissible for you to look at her or be alone with her, as she is a stranger to you.
