What is the ruling on reciting Al-Fatihah after supplication?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no basis for reciting Al-Fatihah after supplication in the Qur'an, the Sunnah, or the practice of the righteous predecessors. The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta' has issued a fatwa stating that reciting it is an innovation (bid'ah). It is recommended to conclude supplication with the remembrance of Allah and salutations upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, just as it is recommended to begin it with them, based on the hadith narrated by Fadalah ibn Ubaid, may Allah be pleased with him: "When one of you supplicates, let him begin by praising Allah and extolling Him, then let him send salutations upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then let him supplicate for whatever he wishes."
