Can the phrase "peace be upon him" (عليه السلام) be used for Ali, may God be pleased with him?

There is no harm in saying "peace be upon him" (عليه السلام) when mentioning Ali or other Companions, because its meaning is sound and it is a form of supplication. While it has become common to use "peace be upon him" when mentioning prophets, "may Allah be pleased with him" (الترضي) when mentioning Companions, and "may Allah have mercy on him" (الترحم) when mentioning the Tabi'in, Ali should not be singled out with "peace be upon him" to the exclusion of other Companions, as some people do. This is because it might imply meanings that innovators use as a ladder to achieve illegitimate objectives. Equality should be maintained among the Companions in veneration and honor.
