What is the ruling on the Imam's saying in the funeral prayer: "O Allah, You find others whom You can punish, but he finds none but You to have mercy on him"?

It is not befitting to supplicate to Allah with the phrase: "O Allah, make Your torment of me an end in itself for You, so that You find none to torment but me," because it implies that there is no wisdom behind Allah's torment, and Allah Almighty does not torment His creation for the sake of torment itself. Indeed, He, the Exalted, said: "What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe? And ever is Allah Appreciative and Knowing." The Permanent Committee was asked about a supplication that included the phrase: "My God, You find others to torment besides me, but I find none to have mercy on me besides You." The Committee responded that these phrases are not befitting. It is better that the supplications for the funeral prayer be those authentically narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
