What is the ruling on going to sheikhs to identify a thief and recover stolen goods?
Only Allah knows the unseen, and He may disclose some of the unseen to whomever of His servants He wills, such as His prophets and messengers. As for those who claim to know the thief or to return the lost, they communicate with jinn and fall under the category of soothsayers. The Sharia has forbidden going to soothsayers and asking them questions. Whoever believes them has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad, and whoever asks them will not have their prayer accepted for forty nights. Therefore, it is impermissible to go to them to identify the thief. Instead, one must turn to Allah Almighty and seek His help, for the loss of money is easier to bear than the corruption of one's religion and the attachment of one's heart to other than Allah.
