Breaking the fast in Ramadan due to illness is permissible. If the person is able to make up the missed days, then making them up is obligatory, and expiation (fidya) is not sufficient. However, if the illness is chronic and there is no hope of recovery, then expiation (fidya) is sufficient. Its amount is 750 grams of the staple food of the people of the land, to be given to the needy.
