Is it permissible to listen to religious lectures or the Qur'an while smoking?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The listener to the words of Allah or to a religious lecture should be attentive and listen intently, in order to benefit from what he hears. This is based on the Almighty's saying: "Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind]," and His saying: "And when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." Smoking is a sin that prevents the descent of mercy. However, listening in this state is better than abandoning it entirely, for the listener may benefit and cease smoking.
