What is the ruling on African hair braids (dreadlocks) for ghusl, knowing that water reaches the roots of the hair and inside the braid, but one cannot be certain that it is free of impurity, and is it necessary to undo them, knowing that they are not undone?
If the braids are extensions and not from the hair of the one performing , then it is not obligatory to wash them during junabah, because they are not part of the body. However, water must reach all of the real hair and its roots. It is not permissible to wear them because they are extensions which are forbidden.
However, if the braids are from the hair of the one performing ghusl, then it is obligatory to wash them, and it is not obligatory to undo them during ghusl for as long as water reaches the roots of the hair, according to the of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). If water does not reach the roots, then it is obligatory to undo them. In this regard, men and women are the same.
