Can a single expiation be made for a vow of persistence (nadhr al-lajaj) in which a sin was repeatedly committed and not fulfilled, or is fulfillment required for each instance? Is it permissible for someone to pay it on behalf of the person who made the vow if they die before settling it? Is it permissible to adopt the most lenient fatwas without adhering to a specific madhhab?

It is permissible for a layperson to follow the Hanbalis in offering a single expiation for oaths that were broken if the wording used implied repetition. The expiation is due immediately, and if one cannot find food to offer, then fasting for three days is required. If one dies without having offered expiation, their obligation is discharged if someone else offers the expiation on their behalf.
