If the mother is financially independent and requests money out of obstinacy, then the son is not obligated to give it to her, especially if he is in need of it. Nevertheless, he must show her piety, treat her with kindness, and be patient with her. It is recommended to give her some money with the intention of showing piety and winning her affection, even if she is financially independent.
