It is not permissible to seek divorce without a real harm; for "any woman who asks her husband for divorce without any harm, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her." The harm that permits divorce is ill-treatment such as beating her, insulting her, or harming her intolerably, or the proven inability of the husband to procreate; because this defeats the fundamental purpose of marriage, which is procreation. It is permissible for the man to divorce and ask for ransom. However, if there is no harm, it is not permissible for the wife to ask for divorce, and she must be patient and treat her husband well, and the husband must live with his wife with kindness.
