What should I do if I enter the prayer and the imam is bowing or prostrating, and when I move to join him, he has already risen; should I complete my bowing or prostration, or should I rise with him immediately?
If you make the takbir for while the Imam is prostrating, and you do not prostrate with him, or you begin to descend for prostration and the Imam rises, then do not prostrate and return to stand with him.
Similarly, in bowing (rukūʿ), if you begin to descend for bowing and the Imam stands up, then do not complete the bowing, and return to standing with him.
In this case, this rak'ah is not counted for you, as the latecomer (masbūq) joins the Imam in whatever state he is in and does not perform a pillar that the Imam has already left.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "When you come to the prayer and we are prostrating, then prostrate, and do not count it as anything. And whoever catches the bowing has caught the rak'ah."
He also said: "If any of you comes and the Imam is in a certain state, then let him do as the Imam does."
