What is wet cupping (hijama) and how is it performed?

Hijama is the extraction of blood from the body by suction with an appropriate instrument or with modern devices that serve the same purpose as suction, and it has been known since ancient times. Its merits have been mentioned in prophetic hadiths, among which is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Healing is in three things: a drink of honey, a cupping incision, and cauterization with fire, but I forbid my Ummah from cauterization." It has benefits in treating diseases such as circulatory diseases, blood pressure, myocarditis, headaches, and rheumatic pains. It is performed by placing a cup on the skin, then removing the air and leaving it, then incising the skin and extracting the blood. It must be performed by someone skilled in it to avoid harm.
