What is the meaning of the Hadiths: "Whoever sits in a gathering in which he does not remember Allah, there will be a regret (or deficiency) from Allah upon him," and "Whoever lies down in a resting place in which he does not remember Allah, there will be a regret (or deficiency) from Allah upon him," and "No people sit in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah and do not send blessings upon their Prophet except that there will be a regret (or deficiency) upon them, and if He wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He will forgive them," and "No people rise from a gathering in which they do not remember Allah except that they rise as if from the carcass of a donkey, and it will be a source of regret for them"? And do they mean the obligation to always remember Allah and send blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) when speaking with anyone, and that there is sin if this is not done?
It is commendable to fill gatherings with the remembrance of Allah Almighty and to spend time in what is beneficial and useful. This is based on the : "Whoever sits in a gathering in which he does not remember Allah, it will be a source of regret for him from Allah." Regret here means sorrow and remorse. Scholars have used these hadiths to deduce the dislike of gatherings being devoid of the remembrance of Allah, not their prohibition. This is because regret is not necessarily due to neglecting obligations; it can also occur due to neglecting recommended acts that elevate one's status. The phrase in the hadith: "If He wills, He punments them, and if He wills, He forgives them," indicates the dislike of leaving a gathering devoid of the remembrance of Allah Almighty.
