Is it permissible for a person to sell his neighbor's car, which he does not own, hoping that the neighbor will agree to the sale later?

The majority of jurists hold that it is permissible for a person to sell another's property without agency or guardianship (unauthorized sale), but its validity depends on the owner's ratification. If the owner approves, the transaction is valid; if they refuse, it is void. Al-Shafi'i and, in one narration, Ahmad, held that the sale is invalid because it was not issued under legitimate authority. Those who permit the unauthorized sale differ on whether it is permissible to proceed with it or whether it should be prohibited.
