How can I reconcile my aspiration to be a modern teenager with pleasing my parents, earning everyone's affection, and getting rid of a friendship I don't want?
The adolescent stage is critical, so caution and adherence to the following are necessary:
1. Performing acts of obedience and abstaining from forbidden acts, while being mindful of Allah, not following the footsteps of Satan, repenting from sins, remembering death and meeting Allah, and making abundant supplications.
2. Choosing good companions and staying away from bad companions.
3. Occupying one's time with beneficial matters for both religion and worldly life.
4. Improving one's character and treating people kindly to win their hearts, knowing that people's affection is solely in Allah's hands. Allah's affection is attained by following the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and drawing near to Him through obligatory acts and supererogatory deeds.
5. Being kind to parents and relatives and being patient with them, as they are responsible for raising and disciplining their children.
6. Choosing righteous female friends and staying away from bad companions.
