Scholars have differed on the ruling regarding wearing red garments due to the existence of hadiths whose apparent meaning indicates permissibility, such as the of Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib: "I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in a red hulla, and I have never seen anything more beautiful than it." There are also hadiths whose apparent meaning indicates prohibition, such as the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas: "I was forbidden from wearing a red garment..." Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in Fath al-Bari, favored its detestability if worn for adornment and ostentation, but permitted it for use within homes and for work.
