What is the ruling on wearing shoes while standing?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no harm in putting on shoes while standing, however, for shoes that require assistance or are difficult to put on while standing, it is better to put them on while sitting, due to the prohibition reported against putting on shoes while standing. Al-Khattabi explained the prohibition by stating that putting them on while sitting is easier, more practical, and prevents falling. Al-Manawi was of the view that the command is for guidance. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen clarified that the prohibition applies to footwear that requires effort to put on while standing, but as for modern footwear that is easy to slip on and off, there is no harm in putting it on while standing.
