What is incumbent upon a man who tore his clothes, broke down, and cried during a quarrel with his wife?

Tearing the garment in distress during calamities is forbidden; it is a major sin if done by choice, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is not one of us who slaps cheeks, tears garments, and calls with the call of Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance)." However, if the doer is overcome and not in control of their intellect, they are not held accountable.

Therefore, one must seek forgiveness and repent for tearing the garment out of distress or exasperation from an argument with one's wife. As for crying, there is no harm in it, though doing so in front of one's wife may diminish a man's standing.
