What is the interpretation of the noble verse: (And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge) in Surat Al-An'am?

Allah forbade Muslims from insulting the false deities of the polytheists, so that the polytheists would not insult the True God, glory be to Him, due to their fanaticism for their religion. For every nation, their deeds have been made appealing to them. Thus, Muslims insulting the deities of the polytheists leads to a greater mischief, which is the polytheists insulting Allah Almighty. This indicates a legal principle that the means leading to something forbidden are also forbidden if they result in evil.
