What is the ruling on dealing with usurious banks out of necessity and dire need, and what is the ruling on migrating from one Muslim country to another in search of work?
It is not permissible to earn a livelihood through unlawful means, because Allah is good and accepts only what is good. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade consuming unlawful earnings and mentioned that one who consumes unlawful earnings will not have his supplications answered, and that every flesh nourished by unlawful means is more deserving of the Fire. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the one who consumes usury, the one who feeds it, its scribe, and its two witnesses. A Muslim must seek lawful sustenance. And whoever gives up something for the sake of Allah, Allah will compensate him with something better. "And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect." This is unless a person reaches a state of necessity that permits forbidden things, keeping in mind that necessity is measured by its extent.
