What is the ruling on watching anime (animated cartoons) and movies on the computer, and is it permissible to watch anime characters that wear revealing clothing, knowing that watching them makes one dispense with the television, and abandoning them may lead to a return to it?

A woman is permitted to watch animated films if they are free from forbidden sounds, and do not contradict the creed or promote vice and immorality. Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen was asked about cartoon images and he said: "As for cartoon images, if they are in the form of a human, the ruling on looking at them is uncertain as to whether they are to be treated like real images or not. The more probable opinion is that they are not to be treated like them. If they are in a non-human form, then there is no harm in watching them if they are not accompanied by any reprehensible matter, such as music or the like, and do not distract one from an obligatory duty." A Muslim woman is advised to utilize her time and energy in ways that bring her religious and worldly benefit.
