The trustworthiness of a narrator and the acceptance of their narration are ascertained through books of biographies (tarājim), history (tārīkh), classes (ṭabaqāt), discrediting and authenticating (al-jarḥ wa al-taʿdīl), books on hadith terminology (muṣṭalaḥ al-ḥadīth) and their commentaries, or by consulting specialists. Among the most important of these books are: Tahdhīb al-Kamāl by al-Mizzi, Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ by al-Dhahabī, Ṭabaqāt Ibn Saʿd, Ṭabaqāt al-Nasāʾī, and Al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr wa al-Ṣaghīr by al-Bukhārī.
