What are the obligatory expiations for an oath (kaffarat al-yameen) incumbent upon the questioner, how are they to be performed, and is one expiation due, or multiple expiations for each of the following cases: Returning to a sin after promising Allah to abandon it. Listening to music after swearing to abandon it. Doing bad things after promising Allah to be a good Muslim. And can the expiation be given as money to a needy person instead of food or fasting, and is it permissible to fast the expiation intermittently?

An oath is broken by doing the thing one swore to abandon, such as listening to music, and only one expiation (kaffarah) is due, even if the act is repeated. An oath conditioned upon an unseen matter (such as forgiveness) is not binding, and even if it were considered binding, it would incur only one expiation. Expiations multiply when oaths are taken on different categories of things. A promise from Allah to do or abandon something is not an oath. The expiation for an oath is feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If one cannot find any of these, then fasting for three days is required. Fasting is only permissible when one is unable to perform the other options. The sufficient amount for feeding is approximately 750 grams of rice per poor person, though it is more cautious to give half a saa' (approximately 1.5 kg). Paying the monetary value or giving the expiation to a single poor person is not sufficient.
