How can I deal with someone at university who thinks I am reciprocating their love, while my feelings toward them do not exceed respect, knowing that communication between us is limited to glances?
This man is a stranger to you, so it is not permissible for him to look at you, nor is it permissible for you to enable him to do so, nor to be alone with him, nor to speak with him except to the extent of academic necessity. The scholar Ibn Hajar Al-Haytami holds that it is forbidden for a man to look at the 'awrah of a free woman who is a stranger, with the exception of the face and hands. If there is a fear of temptation, it is forbidden to look at them [face and hands], and likewise, even if there is no fear of temptation, according to the sounder opinion.
You must turn away from this man, for many glances lead to regrets and problems. If he desires to marry you, then let him approach your guardian, and if he is a man of religion and good character, accepting him is better than rejecting him, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "If there comes to you one whose religion and character you are pleased with, then marry [your daughter to] him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption."
