What is the best way to get rid of showing off (riya') and hardness of heart?

Hypocrisy (Riyaa') nullifies deeds and incurs Allah's wrath; it is a major sin. To eliminate it, one must uproot its foundations and repel any thoughts of it as they arise. The root of hypocrisy is the love of status and prestige, the pleasure of praise, the avoidance of blame, and coveting what people possess. To repel such thoughts, one must strive against the self, uproot its insidious growths from the heart through contentment, abandon covetousness, disregard one's image in the eyes of creation, and hold their blame and praise in contempt. The cure for hardness of heart lies in the Holy Qur'an, in faith, righteous deeds, and in abstaining from harmful things through repentance and seeking forgiveness.
