Why did God not place those who followed Jesus above those who disbelieved, as He promised in verse 55 of Surah Al Imran?

The Almighty's saying: (وَجَاعِلُ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوكَ فَوْقَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ) "And [I am] going to make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve, until the Day of Resurrection" is a promise to the followers of Jesus (peace be upon him) that He will make them superior to the disbelievers. Scholars have differed regarding the meaning of "those who follow you": some said they are the people of faith in his time and the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him), because believing in Jesus necessitates believing in Muhammad. Others said they are the Christians over the Jews. And others said they are the disciples who supported Jesus. They also differed regarding the meaning of "superiority": is it religious superiority (excellence in morals and closeness to the truth) or worldly superiority (dominance and prevalence)? The conclusion is that superiority will be in argument, proof, and dominance for those who truly followed Jesus, and among them are the Ummah of Muhammad who believed in him and in all prophets.
